As much of the US swelters in crazy hot and humid September weather, I wonder - what do we look forward to with the coming fall?
But don't answer the question with the obvious answers...it's cooler, it's dryer, no! Aside from the change in the weather, what do you all look forward to the most with the coming of autumn?
For me there are several things. I think of October 1st as the start of "eatin' season", because that marks the end of summer type foods and more of what I like - chili, soups, a bit more pasta in the diet, and of course a careful selection of all the holiday goodies that appear starting with Thanksgiving. And the apples....love the apples!
I also like the change in clothing from short sleeves and shorts to long sleeved shirts, etc. I like turtlenecks and sweaters, flannels, and tweed sportcoats, especially for school.
I look forward to draining the crankcase of my lawnmower. I look forward to Halloween when I make a scarecrow and put it in a lawnchair on my front lawn, and on Halloween night dress in similar clothes and substitute myself for the scarecrow to scare the kids who come by my house (only the older kids - never the young ones!).
So chime in with your own "Autumn Delights". We all hate the same things about summer...do we like the same things about Fall?

I also like the change of clothing, love flannel shirts! I'd wear them every day if I could. And I love to bake, but not when it's hot outside. A cake or cookies or bread in the oven on a cold day is the best. As much as I like to garden, it is nice to put the garden 'to bed' for the year and not have to force myself to work in it in the heat. And I can finally start going for walks again without feeling like I'm going to die. I know it's a touchy subject, but I do like the smell of burning leaves. And making applesauce, and on and on

I love wearing sweatshirts and long sleeve shirts. I love when the pumpkins are out, in fact our grocery store has put them out today! Of course I bought 2 already, but they are in the house to stay fresh ,too hot out yet. I love making homemade pumpkin bread and apple pies. And making homemade chili. I actually like raking leaves when it's cold out,we can't burn them no longer, but I still love the smell ! And just knowing the yard work is finished till spring is great. It's just nice to be able to bake stuff in the oven and not worry about heating up the house. Also sunset is before 7pm here next week! YAY!! And just seeing the beautiful colors of leaves on the trees and the fields turning golden, love it!

Yes, it's always great to see the pumpkins out and the fields turn a dim golden yellow! As for the trees as the cooler weather settles in, the colors become more vivid as I take a drive through country roads and enjoy the bright blue skies, minus the humidity. It's great to see people in jackets, and to see cloudy, rainy cool days as well. It's a good time to burn some Yankee Candles.

One thing I have to add, and upon reflecti on it's the most important thing, is my ret urn to work as a teacher.
I truly love what I'm doing, and love the kids I'm teaching. My Dad once told me if I do something I like, I'll never work a day in my life. I'm no longer working anymore-I'm playing, and still getting paid. Summertime is hard enough, but now I have to grieve that I can't work for 10 weeks. So the start of the school year and the start of autumn just are the best combination ever.

It was a beautiful day outside Chicago. We had rain and clouds and a high of 62! We haven't had a day like this for ages it seems. Lately it's been sunny and more sun, very tiring! It just felt very fall like today and was welcome!

It sounds like next week will finally cool off. I hope they're right. Could really use some clouds too. At least it's getting closer to cold.

I know exactly how you feel. Looking at the forecast for Chicago for the next 10 days, only Sunday, Oct. 06 will be 60 degrees, and then it climbs back up into the upper 70's. It's been way too sunny, humid and warm for October. Where are the low '60s or even '50s for that matter? I have been waiting all year for relief from this humidity and heat. It just will not stop. It's depressing!! Something has to give. I want that blizzard from Rapid City, South Dakota.... PLEASE. I just don't want to fall back into a deep depression when I have come this far along. Fall and cold weather, please get here quickly. The last half of the summer in Chicago has been miserable and has been lingering well into our autumn season. If others agree in the Midwest region, please kindly respond to this post. Thank you so much. Erik

Hey Erik , I agree bring on the blizzard from South Dakota! It was 87 degrees there on Monday and then they get a blizzard, I would love that!!! And you are right this fall has been WAY TOO WARM here, where are the 50's during the day?? I am sick of sunny and warm it's not normal for fall. Hang in there it's got to get cooler for us soon!!!
