Ever notice how people exaggerate how long cold weather really lasts? Lots of people I talk to around here in Chicago think it's cold from October through May. I'm sorry, but I last had shorts on in November, and I've been in shorts for the past week+. No one ever stops to think that "cold waves" in summer means breaking out the parka, but heatwaves in winter require shorts.
Uggggghhhh.
PS: Love a ranting forum

I find the weather people in Chicago do make it seem that winter weather is just nasty and Everyone hates the snow and cold! And as soon as summer weather,80's and blazing sun , is here well that's just beautiful and everyone LOVES it. NOT!! If they don't like snow and cold ,don't think that everyone else does, too! And you're right about how people think it is cold here from October to May, not true. We just had 74 degrees here on Monday. And April and May have many 80's and 90's ! How short some peoples memories are.

I just got my car tinted with maximum heat rejection; even had the front windshield done too! I just cringe whenever people say "oh, the snow is finally going away!". It was only there for a month tops! We hate the sun as much as they hate the snow, yet they only put up with winter weather for two months tops; we have to put up with the sun the rest of the time. Ugh. You live in Chicago too, ginger? Maybe we should get together and commiserate. Oh wait, it's too hot to go out

We're not even quite at the end of March and already have seen days over 70 degrees This does not bode well for summer. But we're moving to Anchorage at the end of June so I finally get to ESCAPE!

Kitye,
I agree completely, but our perception of the seasons is clearly affected by our own feelings about them. I see summer as stretching from mid-April until mid-October. Spring and fall are each about a month and a half long, leaving blessed winter way too short, passing in just three too-short months. I'd wager that summer lovers sort of reverse the relative lengths of summer and winter, depending on how much they dislike the latter.
I welcome Fall, because it is the herald of winter. It is glorious with the colors of the leaves and the cool, dry weather. Spring, when when the temps are still cool is dreaded. I just can't get excited about the spring flowers and everything else others respond to. All it means is month after month of heat, humidity, and blinding sunlight that will be arriving soon.
We had a wonderful winter in Syracuse this year: we received nearly all of our 120 inches of snow and we had the coldest February in history. The average temp for the entire month was just under 10 degrees F! We also had a very cold January and March.
I hope the coming summer tends to be cooler than usual, but probably it won't.

Greg, Yup, I agree about differences in perception. It just seems to me that most people are literally unable to comprehend that non-certifiably insane people like winter I had a conversation with a friend who is the inverse of us - he loves summer to no end, and dislikes winter. However, he understood the fact that just as he likes high temperatures, there's a group of people who likes the same high temperatures, except with a minus sign in front of it I think it would be nice if the general public was more understanding of this. I'm sort of laughing at the Californians who prize their 70-degree-and-sunny-weather-year-round (only sort of, because drought is no laughing matter); talk about being careful what you wish for.

My whole family all still live in Southern California. They choose to live there because of the weather. They all call me crazy because we're getting ready to move up to Anchorage....for the weather in large part. It is incomprehensible to them that I would choose to live in a place like Anchorage over a place like LA.

Well, tell them you'll have lots of water and will be able to water your lawn and wash your car I honestly cannot fathom how people are unable to tolerate a single cloud in the sky, or a rainy/snowy day. I'm pretty sure we have more sunny/rainless/cloudless days than rainy/snowy days in a year.

I STILL can't wrap my head around the fact that these people can experience 6+ months of triple digits, high humidity and blinding sunshine and then go off to places like Cabo! It's like they really *can't* get enough of the sun and heat! We get a couple days of rain and/or a freakishly cool day and all I hear is whining! I could maybe, MAYBE understand if we experienced the cooler summers like the ones I didn't mind up in WI (I've experienced cool, rainy days and evenings in August up there). But our summers are brutal and seemingly endless! And yet, each warm-searingly hot, cloudless day is "beautiful"!

Brandy,
They behave like that in Southern California as well. I see Facebook posts by my relatives sometimes talking about "gloomy" days when I really want to scream at them "what's the matter....300+ days of solid sunlight and heat is not enough for you???"
At least I can sort of see why people become more giddy with sunny days up here, even though it would seem to me if sun and heat was your thing, perhaps Alaska isn't the place to be? LOL
