I have pretty broad musical tastes, but melody and harmony are especially important as I am a singer and guitarist myself. That said, when I am over stressed by the heat and humidity, and I need to get a break from the summer swelter, my go to music is...
almost anything written by John Williams, the Oscar-winning composer of Star Wars, Schindler's list, and almost all Of Stephen Spielberg's films.
Yeah, I go to orchestral music, especially the music from the films I love. The soaring strings, the brass fanfares, and the memories that the often triumphant music brings forth...all soothe my abraded spirit, calm my jangled nerves, and bring my breathing rate down. I close my eyes, put the headphones on and am transported to the ice planet Hoth and its hidden rebel base.
How about you? I created this new section to solicit your input as to how music in particular can serve as a way to cope with our shared malady.
I look forward to reading any responses...

I like to listen to Adele's music or Billy Joel. Just to get lost in the music in an air conditioned room with no sun allowed to stream in! Even in the evening just close the blinds and drapes with a low light on and listen to the music you love, to forget the heat outside. I also like to watch the movie "Christmas Story" on June 24 or the 25th as it is 6 months till Christmas then, and it puts me in a good mood.

I've been reaching for my guitar a lot the last week. I'm depressed that school is over and I'm depressed that it's summer, and when I'm depressed a few minutes playing my axe, singing a few songs...it really boosts the spirits.
In the context of this forum topic, do any of you play instruments and use them as I use my guitar to cope with or improve your mood. I'd really be impressed by someone here who plays a tuba or other wind instrument to cope with their SAD.
I'd also imagine drums would work, altho' it might drive others to depression!

I am sure I have spoken about this before on this board. I would recommend Thomas Koner, Apocryphos, Council of Nine. Or Sleep Research Facility. It is all dark, sometimes glacially slow, cold ambient music. I find it works very well for me, especially at this time of year.

So now I'll have to go to YouTube to take a listen to your suggestions. I appreciate them and will report back how they may work for me.

I have "No Rain" by Blind Melon on repeat. Very affirming.
