Years ago I mentioned this on a former incarnation of this forum.
I give myself just five emotional meltdowns each summer related to my SAD. That's right, just five. And by emotional meltdown I mean the full blown, raging frustration, shaking my fist at the TV weatherman, screaming meltdown like I had last week in the middle of the latest heat wave.
I limit the number of meltdowns I have to five. Why? Because it makes me pause before I go into one. I only have five to use, and I better be ABSOLUTELY SURE that in the moment it is worth it. That pause gives me control over myself at a time I feel I have no control. I think that sense that we have little control over the weather drives a lot of our seasonal madness, if I can use that term. It's weird, but it works for me.
How about the rest of you? What do you do? Is it music, or reading? Does an episode of Doctor Who "cool" you down, or maybe the Batchlorette? Cold food, cool drinks, a phone call to a calm understanding friend...? Please, share.

Greg, when the heat just is too much I like to turn the ac down to 62 degrees ,close the drapes and blinds and watch a Christmas movie! Anything old or newer about Christmas time and snow! We have a new 6 ft Norway Spruce tree planted in May in our front yard ,to replace a diseased ash tree. Already I'm planning to get colored Christmas lights and decorate it this December ! That makes me feel cooler!! Ginger

Don't know if this is a coping strategy, and I don't know if any of you have visited my teacher web page, but at the bottom of my webpage I have a free widget that counts down until the first day of winter.
I get questions about this frequently, mostly from my students, but sometimes from other teachers, the occasional parent, and often from other earth science teachers who are on a list serve I'm a member of.
I guess I put it there as a way to come out publicly as a lover of winter. Most comments to me are of the sort "Why would you count down to winter? it's like you can't wait for it." They are correct of course, and it often provides an opportunity to discuss with the questioner what SAD is, and how Summer SAD differs from the more common, and certainly more accepted Winter SAD.
I'm a teacher. Putting it up on my webpage is an intentional act. I teach my students to observe the world and I tell them I'll answer any important question they have of me. That widget provides me with a opening to teach others about myself, about Summer SAD, and perhaps encourage some understanding of what we go through every year.
I could put up something that is the equivalent of "Summer Sucks!", but that wouldn't be appropriate on a junior high teacher's website. The widget is appropriate, it often causes a question to be asked, and for that I'm a bit happier.

I saw you on TV once, Greg. It was totally cool. Since joining this forum I have also found several highly active cold-loving pages on Facebook. I find my coping strategies are greatly enhanced just knowing there are many more people out there like us!

just looked up how many days are in the summer of 2016 93 days, 15 hours and 47 minutes. While the winter of 2016-2017 is only 88 days ,23 hours, and 45 minutes. And everyone says the summer is sooo short and winter is so long. This just proves them wrong!!

My dad does the rage thing, I just get really depressed. Sometimes I force myself to go out and run errands or go visit one of the kids, otherwise I probably wouldn't leave the house. Right now watching hockey isn't even helping - lol. I do wish I was at the arena though. I have a snow screensaver on my computer but it's no substitute for the real thing.

I like the Christmas movie idea. Will try it. I like to read books set in winter with lots of cold and snowstorms.
